The project

A research project, brewed into a product.

Tea is Sri Lanka's signature export, yet fresh leaf quality is still judged by eye, and growers rarely see why their leaves fetched the price they did.

TeaOptima began as an academic study into AI-driven tea leaf quality assessment, and grew into a full mobile platform that puts that science directly into the hands of the people who grow, collect and process Ceylon tea.

A single photo is all it takes. The app grades the leaves, explains its decision factor by factor, forecasts how the quality will decay over the coming hours, and pairs the result with indicative Colombo Tea Auction pricing.

  • A grade you can trust and verify. Every result comes with the AI's reasoning.
  • Built on peer-reviewed research, validated on real Sri Lankan harvests.
  • One app for the whole chain: growers, collectors, factory officers and buyers.

The creator of TeaOptima working with tea growers in the field

“Great tea deserves great tools.”

The story

Built in Sri Lanka, for Sri Lankan tea.

TeaOptima started with a simple observation - the people who grow the world's finest tea often have the least visibility into how its quality is judged, and what it's truly worth.

What began as a peer-reviewed research project on AI-driven leaf quality assessment has grown into a complete product - a grading engine that explains itself, a decay model that forecasts the clock ticking on every harvest, and an interface that speaks all three of Sri Lanka's languages.

Every photograph on this site was taken on the same estates and in the same factories where TeaOptima was tested and refined - because this project belongs to the tea country it was built in.

The science

Backed by peer-reviewed research.

TeaOptima isn't a black box. The grading and forecasting methods are published and peer-reviewed, so anyone can read the science for themselves.

The science behind TeaOptima: a two-stage AI pipeline that first grades a photographed tea leaf into four quality tiers with a fine-tuned YOLOv8 vision model, then forecasts how that grade will decline day by day across a 15-day window using the leaf's age and local weather. An explainable-AI layer (SHAP) ranks the conditions driving each day's change, with humidity and temperature chief among them, and turns them into plain-language harvest recommendations.
